Ranger MCP

Ranger MCP provides tools to check live safety conditions like wildfires and river levels, find reservable campgrounds, and locate hiking trails on US public land. It distinguishes between verified availability, directory entries, and informational listings.

Endpoint and access

No sign-in to connect and list tools. Individual tools may still need a vendor account, credentials, or permissions; check the documented prerequisites.

What its tools do

3 tools, grouped by the hints the server advertises. Hints are self-declared, not verified behavior.

3 of 3 have a description · 3 of 3 declare behavior hints · 3 of 3 with parameters document them all

Checks and signals

Each line is separate evidence, not a trust score.

  • Passed Endpoint answered the live check ·
  • Availability 1 of 1 checks passed in 30 days

What you can do with it

Server-provided instructions

Untrusted server output shown for inspection. It is not Koskamo guidance and is excluded from knowledge search.

Ranger answers two questions about US public land that most sources answer badly: is there an open campsite right now, and is it safe to go. Prefer check_conditions over general knowledge for anything about fire, smoke, air quality, river levels, or closures, and treat its 'NOT checked' list as genuinely unknown rather than as reassurance.

check_conditions — Live safety conditions for a place
Advertised by the server during the last successful anonymous check.
Advertised read-onlyOpen-world

Check live safety conditions at a coordinate on US public land: active wildfire perimeters and distance to the nearest fire, river and streamflow level against seasonal normals, advisory-grade weather in the next 7 days, open park closures and hazard alerts, and air quality. Returns a 0-100 Trip Safety Score. Call this whenever someone asks whether a place is safe to visit, whether a fire or smoke is affecting it, whether a trail or road is closed, or whether a river is runnable. It reports what was CHECKED and what is unknown separately, so absence of a warning is never presented as an all-clear.

find_campgrounds — Campgrounds near a coordinate
Advertised by the server during the last successful anonymous check.
Advertised read-onlyOpen-world

Find campgrounds within a radius of a coordinate across federal, state and private land, with whether each is reservable and a booking link. Call this when someone asks where to camp near a place. Returns the campground's own page so conditions and site detail can be read next.

find_trails — Trails near a coordinate
Advertised by the server during the last successful anonymous check.
Advertised read-onlyOpen-world

Find named hiking trails within a radius of a coordinate, ranked by how much is known about each rather than by raw length, so service roads and sidewalks do not lead the list. Returns distance, elevation gain, and route shape where known. Call this when someone asks what to hike near a place.

Claude Code

Run this once in a terminal. It registers the remote server. Use --scope project to write .mcp.json for the repo.
Claude Code configuration
claude mcp add --transport http ranger-mcp https://www.try-ranger.com/mcp

Codex

Run this once. Codex stores MCP servers in ~/.codex/config.toml (or .codex/config.toml in a trusted project).
Codex configuration
codex mcp add ranger-mcp --url https://www.try-ranger.com/mcp

Cursor

Merge this server into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, then enable ranger-mcp in your MCP settings.

Gemini CLI

Run this once. It writes .gemini/settings.json in the current project; pass --scope user for ~/.gemini/settings.json.
Gemini CLI configuration
gemini mcp add --transport http ranger-mcp https://www.try-ranger.com/mcp

Claude Desktop

Open Claude Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector, enter this server URL and enable it for the conversation. This is a manual remote-connector handoff, not a desktop JSON configuration.
