orthotomeo MCP

A read-only scripture-study engine providing complete-or-fail concordance over Greek NT, Hebrew OT, and LXX. It allows AI assistants to retrieve verbatim text, morphology, lexicon entries, and manuscript attestation with traceable citations to source files, ensuring no hallucination or summarization.

What its tools do

12 tools, grouped by the hints the server advertises. Hints are self-declared, not verified behavior.

12 of 12 have a description · 12 of 12 declare behavior hints · 12 of 12 with parameters document them all

Checks and signals

Each line is separate evidence, not a trust score.

  • Passed Endpoint answered the live check ·
  • Availability 1 of 1 checks passed in 30 days

What you can do with it

  • Find every occurrence of a lemma or Strong's number across the corpus
  • Look up morphology and grammar for specific words in verses
  • Retrieve verbatim text with provenance for specific references
  • Check manuscript attestation data for textual variants

attestation — Manuscript attestation
Advertised by the server during the last successful anonymous check.
Advertised read-only

Returns the WHNT-style Type/Editions manuscript-tradition columns as neutral text-critical data (e.g. Mark 16:9-20 = Type KO) - which editions carry a word, with no argument for or against a variant.

concord_lemma — Search concordance (lemma)
Advertised by the server during the last successful anonymous check.
Advertised read-only

Complete-or-fail concordance: every words row in corpus whose lemma, dStrong, or (with by="surface") exact inflected surface form matches query. Route lemma/Strong's-number/surface-word lookups here, never by writing SQL or guessing occurrences from memory. This deployment caps one concordance result at 2000 occurrences and refuses anything broader, reporting the exact match count in the error. Call count first when a query might be broad - count is never capped.

interlinear — Interlinear reading view
Advertised by the server during the last successful anonymous check.
Advertised read-only

Returns a row-aligned reading view for every word in a verse (or one word, if word is given): original text, transliteration, gloss (via lexicon_lookup), grammar, and manuscript attestation stacked per word - the composed display shape for a study reading view, built on parse and lexicon_lookup rather than any new query. This is the most complete per-word view; use parse or attestation when you want only one of those facets.

lexicon_lookup — Lexicon lookup
Advertised by the server during the last successful anonymous check.
Advertised read-only

Resolves a disambiguated Strong's number (dStrong) to its lexicon entry: lemma, transliteration, gloss, and - for a Greek entry only - a fuller definition (Abbott-Smith 1922, Public Domain). A Hebrew entry's definition field is always omitted: it is abridged BDB via Online Bible, which requires permission not yet obtained, so only its gloss is ever returned. Not to be confused with the get_verse/get_passage tools, which resolve a Ref to translated verse text, not a dStrong to a dictionary entry.

parse — Parse morphology
Advertised by the server during the last successful anonymous check.
Advertised read-only

Returns dStrong + expanded morphology (via the T6 morph_codes table) for every word in a verse, or one word if word is given. LXX corpora (Swete, OSS-LXX-lemma) are always Flagged - neither carries morphology.

resolve_ref — Resolve reference
Advertised by the server during the last successful anonymous check.
Advertised read-only

Reports, for every per-verse content edition (KJV, ASV, WEB, BSB, Brenton, TAGNT, TAHOT, Swete, OSS-LXX-lemma), whether a canonical reference has a counterpart there and where. Cross-edition divergence (a T4b merge/renumber/divide, or a reference simply missing from an edition) is reported as Caveats - never a silent shift.

Connect from your client

Each snippet registers the same endpoint; pick the client you use.

This server is operated by the named third party. Listing and endpoint checks are not an endorsement or a security audit. Review the operator's permissions, terms, and data handling before connecting. How listings are checked and corrected.

Claude Code

Run this once in a terminal. It registers the remote server. Use --scope project to write .mcp.json for the repo.
Claude Code configuration
claude mcp add --transport http orthotomeo-mcp https://orthotomeo.app/mcp

Codex

Run this once. Codex stores MCP servers in ~/.codex/config.toml (or .codex/config.toml in a trusted project).
Codex configuration
codex mcp add orthotomeo-mcp --url https://orthotomeo.app/mcp

Cursor

Merge this server into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, then enable orthotomeo-mcp in your MCP settings.

VS Code

Merge this server into .vscode/mcp.json. Use MCP: List Servers to start orthotomeo-mcp and inspect its tools.

Gemini CLI

Run this once. It writes .gemini/settings.json in the current project; pass --scope user for ~/.gemini/settings.json.
Gemini CLI configuration
gemini mcp add --transport http orthotomeo-mcp https://orthotomeo.app/mcp

Claude Desktop

Open Claude Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector, enter this server URL and enable it for the conversation. This is a manual remote-connector handoff, not a desktop JSON configuration.

Windsurf

Merge this into ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json, then refresh MCP in Cascade. Windsurf remote servers use serverUrl, not url.
